My Favorite Locations

As a natural light photographer there's two things I look for in my outdoor photo shoot locations...1) amazing, soft natural light and 2) big open spaces with beautiful backgrounds. I spend quite a bit of time driving around the area seeking out just these types of places. Below you will find a list of, and sample images from, my favorite outdoor photo locations in Shasta and Tehama counties.

The Vista

Arguably the most spectacular sunset location in Shasta County, The Vista is quite the unique location for photos if you're looking for something different. There is a bit of an uphill hike involved, but nothing that the average person couldn't handle. Plus the view at the top is worth it! This location is best suited for:

  • Maternity
  • Small Family Groups
  • Anyone wanting dramatic skies and sunset in their portraits

The Wildlife Preserve

One of my favorite places in all of the North State! This location features open fields, wooded pathways, seasonal ponds, a bridge and a large creek. Spectacular fall colors and beautiful foliage year round can be found here. As part of a California wild lands area there is a $4.50 charge per adult (over 16 years) for daily access to this area. This location is best suited for:

  • Pretty much anything!

The River bend

The River Bend is a public space in Tehama county that features gorgeous light filtered through the oak tress that surround it. There are fields with tall golden grass, a pond and dock too which help add a bit of variety to the images. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals, small or large family groups
  • Spring, Summer and Autumn sessions
  • Evening sunset sessions

The bridge

The Bridge is a stunning Redding landmark surrounded by large trees that provide glorious color in their amber leaves during the fall. In the spring, weather permitting, there are also fields of flowers near by. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals, small or large family groups
  • Early spring or late Autumn (November) sessions
  • Sunrise or Sunset sessions

Camden house

The Camden House is a Shasta County historic landmark and part of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. As such there is a $10 day use fee to access this location. It features a 19th century white farm house, a rustic barn of the same era, beautiful white picket fences, a shallow creek, walking trails and some pretty dramatic fall colors. The Camden House is very popular with photographers in the fall and can be quite crowded, planning ahead for added time is a necessity here. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals or small family groups
  • Spring, Summer or Fall
  • Afternoon sessions

The Lake

This lake location is ideal for those seeking a dramatic artistic backgrounds. The light here is amazing as it is filtered by large mountains immediately to the West and thick trees along the shoreline. The area is accented by large well worn boulders, elegant tall tress and a long sandy beach. As part of a national park there is a $10 day use fee for this location. This location is best suited for:

  • Individual portraits or small family groups (up to 4 people)
  • Light here is gorgeous from sun up to sun down. So it's a great choice for those who cannot do early morning or sunset sessions.
  • Anyone who wants to incorporate water in their session

old town

Old town is a fun alternative to the usual rustic settings I offer. Without any open spaces near by we use the natural shade provided by the buildings to create flattering light. This also allows us to use the textures and colors of the buildings themselves as dramatic backdrops. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals or couples
  • Year round access as much of the location is covered
  • Can be used any time of day

CLOSED FOR FALL 2017 - The lippner homestead

The Lippner Homestead is our home and small farm in East Redding. It is also the location of my photo studio. We have 6 acres of fields and flowers. In the Spring the fields are full of flowers from March until May or June (depending on the weather). In the fall the oak tress that surround us provide glorious fall colors. The light here is very dramatic and quite unique due to the geography around us. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals and small family groups
  • Spring, Summer and Fall portraits
  • Sunrise or sunset sessions

Northern wildflower fields

The Northern Wildflower Fields are a variety of locations in Shasta county that explode with flowers in early Spring. Due to weather and land management practices the location and timing of these blooms varies. These locations are best suited for:

  • Individuals, small or large family groups
  • Afternoon and evening sessions between late March and May (varies by location)

Southern flower fields

The Southern Fields are a variety of privately owned locations in Butte and Tehama counties which I have obtained exclusive access too. They feature a large almond orchard with glorious white blooms, a peach orchard with spectacular pink blossoms and a farm who's fields become a sea of tulips. If you want your portraits to really stand out as something unique these locations are an excellent choice. Reasonable travel fees will apply. These locations are best suited for:

  • Individuals to large family groups
  • Almond orchard - Early to Mid February afternoon or evening sessions
  • Peach orchard - March to April (varies by year) afternoon or evening sessions
  • Tulip fields - April to May (varies by year) evening sessions

The Garden

The garden is a public space in Redding, CA. It offers a variety of different backgrounds from lush green areas to more arid landscape designs. This location is best suited for:

  • Individuals or small family groups
  • Evening sessions from April to November
